Frequently Asked Questions About Solar

What happens to my solar panels if I move?

If you own your solar panel system through a loan or cash purchase, it typically transfers with the home like any other fixture. If there’s still a loan balance, the remaining amount is often rolled into the home’s purchase price or absorbed into the buyer’s mortgage.

If you’re using a lease or power purchase agreement (PPA)—also called third-party ownership (TPO)—the system can still be transferred, but the new homeowner will need to qualify and accept the existing terms. Many TPO agreements also include a buyout option.

At Green Tech Construction, we recommend ownership via loan or cash purchase. It makes transferring your system simpler—and keeps the financial benefits in your hands.

We offer a 5-year roof penetration warranty on all installations. If a leak occurs, we typically respond within 24 hours (often within 6–8). Before any solar panel installation, we inspect your roof to identify and flag potential issues, ensuring it’s ready for a reliable install. We also offer extended warranties for added peace of mind.

Yes. If you need to replace or repair your roof, we can remove and reinstall your solar panels. Costs will vary based on the size and complexity of the system, but our team handles the process with care to protect your investment.

While we don’t make specific promises about home value increases, solar panels can boost resale value. On average, homes with solar can see an increase of around 4%

To a degree, yes—but much less than homes without solar. We design each system to offset 100% of your current energy usage when possible. While you’re still connected to the grid, any extra electricity you need will come from your utility. Adding battery storage increases your independence and protects against rate hikes even further.

HOAs in Chicago and surrounding areas rarely block solar panel installation outright, though they can add extra requirements. We’ve worked with many HOAs to get projects approved—it’s a common and manageable part of the process.

In most cases, no. You can often add your solar panel system to your existing home warranty coverage. We also provide extended warranties for additional protection.
